Produced by Don Was and Mayer, the album was recorded at multiple studios including Electric Lady Land Studios (New York City), The Village Studios (Los Angeles, Berkeley Street Studio (Santa Monica) and Ocean Way Recording (Hollywood). The album debuted at #2 on the Billboard 200 chart, with first-week sales of 145,560 copies in the United States. It is his first album since 2006's Continuum to not debut at #1.
