Produced by James Ford, the album was recorded at La Fabrique Studio in France and was described by frontman, Yannis Philippakis, as their loudest and heaviest record to date. What Went Down debuted at number 3 on the UK Albums Chart and at number 58 on the Billboard 200, making it their highest charting album in the United States
